It’s easy to overindex on using the Pareto principle for everything. Where you only ever hunt for the outcomes that get you 80% of the way there for 20% of the effort.
You’ll sometimes hear the quip that if you’re 90% done then you’ve made it halfway. It’s a good quip because it’s funny, true, and holds a lot of wisdom. This is one of those things that you tend to learn the hard way and eventually internalize with experience. What ostensibly looks great as a V1 of a product becomes a surface area of infinite depth, detail, and tradeoffs that require an increasing amount of design and engineering to reach its most optimal state. And when markets are always changing and evolving, that most optimal state changes with it.
If you happen to be operating in a power-law-driven market or environment, then there is likely unfathomable and exponential upside in spending relatively extreme amounts of effort to close the gap between something that goes from 80% complete to 99% complete. The difference between the best product in the market and second place can be many multiples in value, and then the difference between even 1st and the 5th best can be many orders of magnitude. Things that make it into the final 1% end up being some magical blend of cost-effective, performant, simple, and beautiful for their stated task.
Every gain you make increases the barrier to entry to compete against you, and each detail required to make the thing get to that point becomes impossible to intuit and blindly copy by someone with a lot of time and tokens on their hands. Not just because they have to wander through the same maze (albeit with some of that map revealed), but because you’re a moving target that is also progressing.
This is a great fact to remember, especially in a time like now where AI is rapidly lowering the cost to create things, because it can make you think harder about what you’re willing to spend your time and tokens on. Sure, you can get to an 80% complete version of a thing, and that is super cool and fun at this moment in time, but what are you willing to grind and strive to reach the final 1% on? If you find the answer to that, then it’s worth spending all of your attention on just that one thing, since there are exponential returns to be gained if you are able to get to that point. With the first 80% getting cheaper than ever, that makes the final 1% even more valuable.
P.S. you could reasonably take this further to the final basis point, aka 0.01%
