It’s counterproductive to spend time arriving at insights that are not actionable by you.
Being in a state where you’re having insights that you cannot action directly is a great way to drive yourself insane. Or at least make yourself frustrated or stagnant.
Don’t get me wrong, it can be very entertaining to think about things completely outside of your control, but it might not be the best use of your thinking. These insights make you feel smart but leave you feeling powerless.
The name of the game is your available action set. The universe of things that you can actually do today. If you think about it, it’s a surprisingly large set of possible things you can do at any given time. In fact it can be good to simply remind yourself of this fact and think of all of the things you could do right now if you pierce through the veil of your day to day routine, expectations and habits.
Once you’ve spent some time and realized that there’s a large action set in front of you, this is where the game of picking the best actions occurs.
It’s entirely reasonable to not think too much about this at all and flow through the most obvious ones as much as you can.
It also could be worth thinking very far out and at a high level to set yourself some goals and ideals and visions for what you want in the long term. These are insightful and useful because they are a filter to help choose what to do right now. But it’s important to not get stuck here and make sure they help you decide which actions to take today.
If you’re in the realm of creating, building or investing then there’s a lot of upside in thinking quite hard about what you’d like to do. And this is where it’s particularly important to bring yourself to the actionable set regularly, otherwise you end up in a position where you’ll abstract yourself away from things you can actually do and be stuck in a purgatory of vision and insights and nothing to show for it. It’s like a really well informed spectator mode. Or perhaps a constantly frustrated armchair commentator.
So then the simple question to ask for any given insight, vision or thought is: “what can I do about this right now?”.
If there’s nothing, then think about why that is and what would need to be true to take some actions, and then do those. Otherwise let it go and find the next best action to take.
Repeat until satisfied.
